Milestones
In 1995, Professional Coach Thomas Leonard started the International Coach Federation (ICF) as a nonprofit organization for fellow coaches to support each other and grow the profession. The following year, a president was appointed and a board of directors established. The first ICF Chapter was established, and by May 1996, there were more than 60 ICF Chapters worldwide.
On the 20th of June 2018 the community of coaches in Sri Lanka launched the Association of Professional Coaches with the vision of forming the ICF Colombo Chapter to enhance the professionalism of the coaching industry. This enabled a membership of more than 40 coaches to communicate, interact and upskill themselves. The purpose of the association was to give credibility to an emerging profession and give coaches a place to connect with one another.
2021 is a historical moment for the professional Coaching community in Colombo as ICF International granted approval of Chapter status unveiling the ICF Colombo Chapter on the 29th of October 2021. The founding Leadership team will continue with the vision of strengthening and educating the coaching profession in Sri Lanka through the Chapter activities and by closely working with public entities, educational institutions, and private organizations to promote the understanding of coaching and the ICF Colombo Chapter.
